Poop to Tile Project
Poop to Tile Project
What happens to things after they are flushed down the toilet? Household drainage will be collected in sewage treatment plants, for decomposition by microorganisms. The resulting liquid is disinfected and released into rivers and sea. The residue is a watery sludge, which is incinerated until all that remains is sludge ash. Conventionally it is used as fertilizer or in cement making. Kano collaborated with LIXIL to turn sludge ash into tiles.
Using only this ash as base material for the body, Kano developed and applied glazes, and experimented with mixing ratios and firing temperatures. He observed the resulting variations in color and feel.
