WOOD-LIKE PAPER PAPER-LIKE WOOD

WOOD-LIKE PAPER PAPER-LIKE WOOD

In the era when paper was precious, wood was common and people used to wrap things with kyogi, thinly shaved wood. With moisturizing and antibacterial properties, kyogi had many uses, particularly for wrapping foodstuffs, but in the 1960s, a distribution revolution occurred along with the establishment of a mass production of paper, eventually leading to today’s replacement of paper with plastic, and kyogi gradually disappeared.

Paper and wood are inseparably connected, with their roles changing over time. However, it’s worth remembering that ultimately, paper is derived from wood. So what’s the difference between paper and wood? We experience wood that is 1mm thick as “wood”. So what if it’s 0.5mm thick? This still feels like “wood”. What if it’s 0.2mm? 0.1mm? I decided to make 0.1mm my determinant measurement, and, borrowing the highly precise technical prowess of a woodworker and paper processing artisan, I explored the possibilities of modern paper and wood packaging.
