The Asanuma Corporation, a general building company, renovated their 30-year-old Nagoya branch into a "GOOD CYCLE BUILIDING."
STUDIO YUMAKANO designed and produced tabletops using the original material ForestBank™ to blend wood from forests in Hida, Yoshino cedar from Nara, scrap from the construction site, and leftovers from furniture production to create a custom material.
The GOOD CYCLE BUILIDING concept is based around the ReQuality natural cycle, and extends throughout the project from the space itself to construction. This includes material design, which we undertook, and we successfully tested upcycling what would have been waste from the site into building material.
The material includes a blend of elements of wood from every facet of the project, from leaves, branches, bark, and earth from the site where the 130-year-old Yoshino cedar logs used for the facade were collected, as well as scrap wood from the interior and exterior, leftover earth from earthen walls, and scrap material from the creation of furniture.
The ForestBank made for this project is completely unique and will only appear in this project. Even the design process of this conceptual material holds a deeply rich story.
As time passes and through maintenance just two millimeters were removed, it would create an entirely different pattern. If the user has love and understanding of the background of this material, it will recall the past, as it is not simply a material, but also a treasure trove of memory.
