Sign Design for RENOA KITA-AKABANE

We planned signs that have images of everyday life in them and act as devices that encourage communication that can only happen in housing complexes.
The 28-year-old housing complex was built as an employee dormitory and converted to 147 units of family housing. In addition to reforms, shared spaces such as kitchens, multipurpose spaces, pergolas, laundry rooms, music studios, and a rooftop deck were constructed, and outdoor features such as fruit gardens, green commons, EV recharge stations and car wash areas, a café next to the shared kitchen, and benches next to roads were installed. This was all designed with the idea of sharing these spaces with people in the area, not just people living in the housing complex, and free movement in and out.

These signs were planned around the concept of devices to invite communication in these shared spaces, so they were designed to be easy to understand by anyone, fit naturally into living with a motif of everyday life. Information signs like hanging laundry, floor number signs like clocks, a ruler to measure height. These signs are made not just for function, but to instill a spirit of playfulness, and act as conversation starters.
In addition, some places had to be left as-is as part of the conversion plan, such as indoor stairs, trash collection areas, bike parking, and so on, and while they couldn't be changed, they are a part of everyday life that can become disorderly. In these areas, we made bold use of graphical designs to provide some warmth and hopefully encourage people to be considerate when using these places.
With marks for where to place shoes when going inside, a place to measure your height on a pillar, a crosswalk mark on the wall of the bike parking, and more, we wish for these signs to facilitate education and communication between families, bringing people closer together in life, whether they are children or grownups.
